THE PHONEWORLD

Category: Let's talk

To be PERFECTLY HONEST, I SURELY WISH I could've come up with a RATHER DEEP, PROVOKATIVE TITLE to describe the EVER-INCREASING "VIRTUAL COMMUNITY," known as "THE PHONEWORLD," but I JUST COULDN'T, unfortunately. ANYWAY, I'VE been in "THE PHONEWORLD," since SEPTEMBER, 1995.
What's "THE PHONEWORLD?" It's PROBABLY BEST DESCRIBED as the PHONE version of online chat systems--either INSTEAD OF, or IN ADDITION TO, TEXT messages, would be VOICE, and just as there are online features, various PHONE systems are packaged with "STATE-OF-THE-PHONE/WEB-ART," if you will, accomodating enhancements that are designed to meet the VAST MAJORITY of users' needs, as large demands call for specifics that MIGHT include ANYTHING, ranging from voice-mailboxes to ANY/ALL OTHER known/unknown.
What would REALLY be interesting to study is the ACTUAL HISTORY, starting with WHO started it, WHERE, and CERTAINLY WHEN. If there's ANYONE that's JUST AS INVOLVED in the phoneworld as I am, that would DEFINITELY know AS MUCH (HOPEFULLY ALL) of its origin AS POSSIBLE, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to contribute to this topic, as WELL.

I must say, it's interesting although I am not a part of this world myself.
I was on this system a while back called the loup but that didn't last long. I guess I never really saw the point of returning to the "phone world."
I actually believe the loup was the first of these systems but I could be wrong.

I know there was something on Tellme a while ago called Graffiti and I used to love it. As far as I know, hot lines and the like were really popular in the 70's but I don't know too much about them. Btw, I'd love to join the phone world so any tips, tricks or suggestions would be appreciated. I tried something called talkee.com but it seemed like it was full of weirdos and when I tried to sign up for a web account at talkeepeople.com it wasn't completely accessible.

I've been a part of "the phone world" for a while now. It's nothing but drama. If you've managed to stay away from it for this long, my advice would be to keep doing what you're doing.

It can be quite adictive and time-consuming. I was a part of something called e-voice many years ago, and that got a bit overwhelming. I agree with Brooke.

I think I'll stay away...

QUESTION: How is it ANY MORE-OR-LESS "DRAMA-ISH," if you will, in the "ONLINE WORLD?" After ALL, just as there's BASHING, TRASHING, ETC., as well as there's NON-BASHING, NON-TRASHING, ETC., between BOTH WORLDS, which BOTH can be JUST AS PROBLEMATIC, as can ALSO be VICE VERSA, NEITHER is ANY BETTER THAN THE OTHER.

I'll give ya that terrance. Theirs drauma wherever ya go. I actualy like reading this thread when it pops up. I've only used ZBP for the phone world, and that was to check my voice mail. It wasn't that interesting.

Post 9 by mygodchosenbride&i4lifefinally (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Sunday, 07-Dec-2008 17:57:09

Yeah--ZBP DOES have its advantages, even though it has less to offer than online, as far as FEATURES are concerned.

wow! i'm all sorts of impressed with this topic. it's actually something that people can reply to and understand. good job terrance.
i've used zbp. used to call the date line things with my girlfriends to make fun of the horny guys.
but yeah that's about it.

Post 11 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Sunday, 07-Dec-2008 22:48:46

You called date lines to poke fn of guys? Oh my.
Well as I've said, the "phone world" isn't for me.

Post 12 by ocean blue (what you see! is what you get!) on Monday, 22-Dec-2008 12:38:49

Well what a good topic. The zone was my first online chat community but before that I was on different phone systems. So yes I agree with brooke. It can be fun for a while until all kinds of drama begin. But I also know that can happen with online too. but I feel like you can really get to know someone over the phone better then just chatting online. So witch ever one you feel you enjoy more is the one you will use.

Post 13 by cumbiambera2005 (i just keep on posting!) on Monday, 22-Dec-2008 12:47:15

Omg I used to get on this chatline called Hotlinks all the time! Now it's called "The Hookup" and it sucks! But anyway...
Yeah I agree it can be fun! i've had my reasonable fun on those things and have met some interesting guys...and I mean interesting...but yeah those things can be full of drama but only if you get on a specific chatline all the time. Mostly I try to stay out of it though.
And omg! i used to make fun of horny guys too! That was fun! Ooo those were the days! Lol!

One of the biggest problems with the "phone world" is that when you call one of those phone lines, the line runners automatically get your number. It doesn't matter if you block your number now. Most of the time they can get it anyway. Some phone lines are safe because the line runners are people that are trustworthy. But others are swarming with hackers, and it's really not safe. If your number falls into the wrong hands, your private and personal info may not be so private anymore.

Oh I did not really know that. Just another to steal people's personal information. I use to chat on the phone party chat it was called, and there was drama, I guess its anywhere people hang out.

call from skype that really screws them up!

Post 17 by cumbiambera2005 (i just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 23-Dec-2008 12:44:56

Lol! Yeah i got blocked from a chatline once and had to change my number because the I was afraid the person was probably trying to track me.

Post 18 by jaguar (Addicted to the Zone) on Wednesday, 24-Dec-2008 14:14:40

The phone world can be fun but for sure it has a great deal of drama. I've met some of my best friends from evoice which I was addicted to and I swore I'd never get that involved with another phone system. I'm on a couple of other systems now but just get on for down time and try to steer clear of the drama.

Is "THE HOOKUP" COMPLETELY FREE for EVERYBODY?
As far as HACKERS and such, when "8'S" were the order of the day BACK WHEN, it's been QUITE OFTEN MENTIONED that hackers that were responsible for setting up the "8'S" in the FIRST place, were the ones that IMMEDIATELY had TOTAL ACCESS to ANY NUMBER that called in, but I haven't had any hacking problems, although I STILL COULD'VE, despite my BLOCKING my number before dialing in--and for those that don't know what "8'S" WERE, THAT was a term, short for any 800-866-877-888-toll-free access that hackers were EXTREMELY SKILLFUL at experimenting with, that involved using either a BUSINESS or RESIDENTIAL NUMBER, UNBENOUNCED to the OWNER of such, which would be lynked to either any of the "TALKEE" or "STUDIO 55" lines, which are CHATLINES, in case if there's anyone that didn't already know that, and due to the OVERWHELMINGLY EXTREME VOLUME of callers through whatever hacked number ONTO these lines, that would DEFINITELY run the phone bill/bills of those that were hacked BEYOND EMBARRASSING EXTREMITIES, numbers would go DOWN, as well as would come UP; OF COURSE, HACKING is a DEFINITE RISK, which is what I wouldn't wanna participate in, because I don't wanna go to the "CROSSBAR HILTON," if you know what I MEAN, but I would ALWAYS ask WHOEVER would know if any "8'S" were available, and the life-span of ANY "8" was ONLY a matter of UNSPECIFIED time.

So, coming from someone who knows next to nothing about the phone world:
Everyone says stay away and tries to put everyone off. When asked why, they all seem to go into great length referencing people and events purely by name with out giving any information that people that have not been exposed to this world would understand. Could someone give some examples as to exactly why this is a bad thing?
As far as hackers go, I don't see how this is such a big deal? There are far more hackers on the internet than on a single phone system surely? Does the idea of trying to avoid being hacked not sound some what fun?

Post 21 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 29-Dec-2008 22:55:11

Blocking your number doesn't necessarily mean the line owner won't get it. Depends on the software they're using and the technology they have access to.
Examples? I won't go into specifics using names, because I'm not going to put anyone's personal business out here. But say you call a phone line that's run by someone who isn't trustworthy (like I said before, whether you call blocked or unblocked doesn't matter). That person then hass access to your phone number, which can give them a lot of info about you. It can also allow them to use a spoof card (which is a sort of calling card where you place a call but have the option of choosing what number will ID). The person who gains access to your number can then "swat" you, which means they call the cops but enter your number into the spoof card. And next thing you know, the cops are at your house.
It's happened to people that I know, so it's not all a game.

Well, as far as the PHONEWORLD to either be a good or bad thing, ONLY YOU could make it either or for YOURSELF, REGARDLESS of ANYBODY ELSE'S behavior. Of COURSE, the SAME RULE APPLIES on SIBERWORLD chat systems, as WELL. Fraudulent activity DOESN'T EVER DISCRIMINATE between the two worlds, quite obviously.
